Understanding Early Pregnancy hCG Levels: A Doctor's Perspective

Question
Hi Brenda!  I'm hoping you can give me your thoughts on my current pregnancy.  I had a positive OPK on 7/5 & 7/6, so I assume I probably ovulated on 7/6.  I had a positive HCG of 27 on 7/17.  On 7/19 it was 69, and on 7/21 it was 182.  I know these numbers are doubling, but they seem so low compared to what my levels were with my daughter.  We had two miscarriages before our daughter was born, and we've had 2 after her, with the most recent being this past January.  Obviously, I'm a nervous wreck and am looking for an honest opinion, because I don't whether to be excited or not.  Please let me know what you think.  Thanks!

Answer
Dear Christina,

As long as that hCG level is doubling every 48-72 hours, everything is developing as expected to date. Each pregnancy is different and there is an extremely broad "normal" range for hCG with each week in the first trimester. With the exception of your history of miscarriages, there really appears to be nothing that would cause us concern about this pregnancy thus far.

I hope this has helped you and answered your question. I wish you well.

Brenda
