Questioni recently found out i was pregnant, did a test day after period due (mon) on the fri i noticed blood when i woke in morning, it tends to ease up throughout the day to nothing in eve then starts again in mornin, a small amount of red blood but mainly like the end of a period, no clots or pain. its been 4 days now, does this sound like the start of a miscarraige? i've been docs on fri he said to do another test in few days but i'm worried if still bleeding test may say possitive but i'm miscarrying?
AnswerHello Freya
I am not medically qualified, but I am shocked that a doctor has suggested a pregnancy test as a way of diagnosing a miscarriage. I would go and seek a second opinion from a different doctor.
hCG (the pregnancy hormone) is what gives you a positive test result. This can stay in your system for up to 4-6wks AFTER a miscarriage, so relying on a pregnancy test to tell you if you are still pregnant is not a sensible suggestion. You may get false results and this could delay any treatment you need, so your concerns are absolutely spot on!
In reference to your bleeding, some women do experience bleeding especially in the early stages of pregnancy with no consequence to their baby. However, any bleeding does need to be investigated. It could be a prelude to a miscarriage, spotting can be one of the first signs of a problem leading to heavier flow & passing clots with or without pain. Sometimes the bleeding stops & the Mother finds out at her 12wk scan that she has had a 'missed miscarriage' - this is where the body fails to recognise that the foetus has stopped growing and retains it.
You are still in the early stages of pregnancy and it may be hard to see anything on a scan. I do urge you to seek advice from a different doctor, but it may simply be a matter of waiting to see what happens. They may book you in for a scan at a later date or do some blood tests to see how high your hCG levels are.
I do hope this has helped and that you can find some answers. Do come back if I can help you with anything else.
Kindest Regards
Sarah
