Post-Abortion Bleeding: What to Expect & When to Worry

Question
Hi. I had a medical abortion on 28th July. Everything was text book and no complications occurred, however 7 weeks on i am experiencing intermittent bleeding, which is mostly very light and only needs a pantyliner. Last Saturday, after having almost 2days of no bleeding and virtually no spotting,i had a bleed and a clot.after that, virtually no bleeding and back to intermittent spotting. On monday i experienced a tight, almost bruised sensation in my lower abdomen.this has now subsided. I am now back to occasional spotting and bleeding and slight cramps, which makes me think i may be starting my period. As yet my period has not come and this concerns me. I guess i just want my body to go back to normal. I feel quite stressed about the continual stop/starting of bleeding and feel a bit like a defective typewriter. I guess i just need reassurance this is normal and that i have not ruined future plans for starting a family.
Kind regards

Answer
With the pill, you can have irregular bleeding for up to 12 weeks.  We usually have our patients come back for an ultrasound if the bleeding lasts longer than 8 weeks. You should be fine.  If you are concerned have a check up.  This does not cause infertility.
