Faint Positive Pregnancy Test & Early Symptoms: What to Do?

Question
Hi.

I did a pregnancy test the day i was due my period. I got a very faint positive. I Started to feel slight uterus pans ( all the normal stuff) stretching around my belly button etc.. I also had tiredness and bloatedness in the evening.

I went at 5 weeks to my GP to confirm the pregnancy and her test showed up faint line too but with the symptoms i had she sent me to the hospital just to double check everything was going ok. I went into the hospital that day and nothing showed up on an u/s or internal scan. They took some blood and 48 hours i went back to give more blood to compare HCG levels were rising ok. I went back to the hospital at 5w 4days and there was still nothing showing in my womb no sac or fetus, although the lining of my womb had started to thicken up. They thought maybe ectopic. By blood results showed my HCG levels were very low only 340 and then 48 hours later showing 520. They continued to rise slowing, 5 days later at 6 weeks 2 days my HCG only went up tp 640 and another internal scan showed still no sac in womb or ovaries or anywhere else.

I am now 7 weeks since my last period, no sac or fetus showing in womb , HCG levels have now dropped down to 420 this week. I have been told my the hospital that the pregnancy is now gone. I am trying to get my head around this but i have had no bleeding??

I asked the hospital when would i expect to bleed to show a miscarry and they werent sure. The hospital said my body may just absorb the pregnancy and i wont bleed until my next period.. This is so hard to understand. So when will i get a period or have any kind of bleeding? I thought a chemical pregnancy was when the egg died before reaching the womb which would bring on a period a few days after you were late. It's been 3 weeks now. I have never had a late period ever, i have always been 28 days..

Thank you for reading my question

Answer
Hi Nicola
Every established pregnancy (where the egg implants and starts to grow, thus producing hCG) will produce some sort of tissue. This tissue will eventually come out, but the pregnancy probably stopped growing so early on that your body has re-absorbed the embryo and any tissue remaining is so little that it'll come out with your next period.

I cannot say when this will happen. It could be at your next calculated period or it could be a little late. Don't be alarmed if it is late as this is perfectly normal, but if you have not had a bleed within 8wks of your last period then go back and see your doctor.

It's hard to get your head around a 'miscarriage without bleeding', it seems to go against the rules. However you WILL bleed, so in effect saying it's a miscarriage without bleeding is a false statement. It simply means that your body just didn't have the time to build up enough tissue for your body to expel.

I hope this has helped and please do come back if I can help you with anything else.

Kindest Regards
Sarah
