Understanding Chemical Pregnancies: Symptoms, Causes & What to Expect

Question
Hi,
I am Sunitha.M , from USA. I took the pregnancy test at home on 10 th
of july 2007, and found positive. but just after 1 week,ie on 17th of
july ,i had severe cramps and
bleeding ,I went to the lady doctor  in Nashua for blood test and she
told,that i had chemical pregnancy.After 1 week i got the blood test
results, that showed my HGC level as 24.
I did a lot of house hold work and was getting tired from three days
before i had heavy periods. Could this be the reason for chemical
pregnancy.please tell me, so that i can be cautious when i conceive next time.
My mother-in-law said that the pregnancy will be confirmed only after 3
months, and that this bleeding is just a normal menses. Is it
true, that i was not pregnant even when my hgc was reported to be 24,when i
took the blood test on 17th of July 2006 during heavy periods.

Answer
Hi Sunitha,

Just to recap the information that you have given me:

You took a positive home pregnancy test on the 10th of July
On the 17th of July you experienced cramping and bleeding
You then went to a doctor who did an HCG blood test and confirmed that you had a level of 24 (this indicates that you were pregnant; I'm not sure what your doctor meant by a "chemical pregnancy"; you should really ask her to clarify this for you)

Based on this information, I would say that you were definately pregnant and then experienced a miscarriage.  Doing a lot of physical work will not usually bring on a miscarriage, unless there are other factors.  Home pregnancy tests can sometimes have a false negative, but rarely a false positive.  The HCG test and the home pregnancy tests together are fairly conclusive that you were pregnant.

Unfortunately, miscarriage is more common that most people realize.

Hope you are doing well.
