Understanding Slightly Abnormal Lab Results: Alkaline Phosphatase, Lymphocytes, ALT, and MPV

Question
QUESTION: I have a Alk Phosphatase of 39, which is in the low range, and lymphocytes in the high range of 7.78, and also low alt/sgpt of 25. Can you tell me if these numbers are a big deal, and what could cause them to be out of range. And also elevated MPV of 11.4. Thanks, I'd appreciate some insight. Thank you in advance.

ANSWER: Hi Martha.  All of the lab results you provided are only slightly out of normal range, and are unlikely to be of any clinical significance.  Also, note that ALP (alkaline phosphatase) and ALT are only significant if they're elevated.

QUESTION: Dear Samantha, does MPV indicate liver damage from alcohol? Was an issue in my youth, but I overheard one of the nurses state that it is often elevated due to drinking (was working at a Community Clinic at the time and she stated that was a quick and dirty explanation of elevated MPV)? Wow, what a service, I'll pass this on. Thank you so much. M

Answer
Hi again, Martha.  I have never heard of a high MPV having anything to do with liver damage. MPV (Mean Platelet Volume) is a machine-calculated measurement of the average size of your platelets. New platelets are larger, and an increased MPV occurs when increased numbers of platelets are being produced. MPV gives your doctor information about platelet production in your bone marrow.  The most common tests to show liver damage (from anything) are AST and ALT (which are liver enzymes) and total and direct bilirubin.
