Gold & Amethyst Ring Appraisal: Value & Selling Options

Question
my grandfather left me a 10 karat gold ring with a very large amethyst in it. its big and gaudy like all old rings. unflawed gem but unpolished gold. sorry if its not your area of expertise but i wanted to know if you could give me a good estimate

Answer
Josh,

I would need to know how good the amethyst is, color and weight.
Also how much the ring weighs to calculate the gold content.

There are two ways to look at it.  One is selling as is to a retail buyer.  Or selling it to a wholesale buyer how would pay you a percentage of the gold content and maybe some token price for the stone.

For example if the ring weighed 10 grams aprox 41 percent would be gold.
Which is about 4.1 grams.  At 700.00 gold one gram is worth about 23.00
which is about 94.00 for your gold.  The catch is it is unrefined so they may only give you half the value or 47.00.  The stone really does not count for much unless it is a really top notch quality.  Then you would want to take it out and sell it on ebay.  It may bring you 10 to 50.00 depending on size and color.

I hope this helps.
