Early Pregnancy Concerns: Light Bleeding & Low HCG - Seeking Information

my lmp started on the 24th dec, trying to conceive for nearly 3 years found out 2 weeks ago I'm pregnant but had light bleeding. was sent to the early pregnancy unit and had a vaginal ultrasound which showed nothing except a thickened endometrium. my hcg level was 57, 2 days later was 68 and 2 days later was 84. low levels are worrying is the likely hood of miscarriage or ectopic high or can the levels be low for a while my period was due today! think i ovulated either the 2/3rd of jan

Hello Laura,

The BHCG hormone levels would be too low for anything to be seen on ultrasound, but also, they are not rising normally.  Normally, the BHCG's would double every two days.  Obviously, yours are not.  This is an indication of an abnormal pregnancy.  It could be an ectopic (tubal pregnancy), but I would doubt that too because ectopics tend to rise normally in the beginning, since it develops normally up to a point.  It is most likely that this pregnancy will end as a miscarriage, what we call a "chemical pregnancy."  Your doctor will need to follow the hormone tests to see it fall to near zero.  The miscarriage will be like just having a heavier than normal period.
