QuestionHi Doctor,
My husband and I recently underwent IVF treatment, my LMP was 11th Dec 09, produced 6 follicles and embroy transfer was done on 24th Dec 09 (3 embroys transferred)I have been to my GP in the UK and blood test came up as 9mUI(done on 7th Jan) and pregnancy test shows faint line(done 6th jan and 12th Jan) My GP says this means that I am not pregnant, is there any other test that can be carried out to determine if pregnant or not ( my Gp refuses to send me for a vaginal scan). Regards Amber
AnswerHello Amber from the U.K.,
It would be too early for a vaginal scan. The embryo/pregnancy has to develop a certain amount before it can be seen on ultrasound.
The proper protocol is to do a serum/blood pregnancy test. In our clinic, bHCG's of any number above 1 are positive because we do testing early after the transfer. Your initial test was done 14 days after transfer so it should have been higher, however because there was a bHCG level, it could indicate a chemical pregnancy. I would have repeated it in 48 hrs to see if it is going up or down. At this date, if you are pregnant, it should show on both a blood and urine pregnancy test. If you want to verify it for sure, then I would recommend a blood pregnancy test.
