Ovulation Before Ovidrel Shot: Impact on Insemination & Conception

Question
I took 25 mg Clomid days 4-8 had a blood test and sono today, I have one follicle 25mm on left side, no fallopian tube on that side and  7.5 and 9mm follicles on right side with fallopian tube.  I am scheduled for insemination tomorrow morning.  I am pretty sure I already ovulated about an hour ago but I am scheduled to take a shot of Ovidrel tonight. Is it already too late to conceive? Will taking the Ovidrel still have any benefit?

Answer
Hello Grace from the U.S.,

A 25 mm follicle is usually the size at ovulation, so there is a high chance that you would ovulate spontaneously.  So, you may be right about that.  In that case, the Ovidrel will not be of much benefit, but can help to support the endometrial lining.  I would take it anyway.  It will not hurt.  In terms of your timing for IUI, it may be too late if you ovulated today.  You should have intercourse today just to be sure.  IUI should precede ovulation to be effective.

The 7.5 and 9 mm follicles are not going to ovulate.  In fact, this shows that the amount of medication you used (Clomid) was too low and did not increase the number of ovulatory sized follicles, which is the goal with superovulation.  Besides, the minimum dose of Clomid is 50mg.  I don't understand why your doctor only prescribed 25mg?  Are you seeing a fertility specialist or a general Ob/Gyn doc?
