Heavy Bleeding & Infertility: Understanding the Connection

Question
Does heavy bleeding and late periods mean you can be infertile? My husband and i have been "trying" for a year and a half, and i wanted to know how to find out if i'm infertile or not.

Answer
Hello Ana from the U.S.,

The simple answer to your question is no.  However, considering that you have not gotten pregnant in over one year, there is something going on that is not normal.  If your periods are irregular and unpredictable and occur every 1.5 months or so, that could explain why you are having heavy periods and a possible reason why you are not getting pregnant.  It could mean that you have an ovarian dysfunction or hormonal imbalance.  But, there can be other reasons as well.  I think it is time for you to go see a fertility specialist and have an evaluation done.
