Post-Embryo Transfer Bleeding: Understanding What's Normal & When to Worry

Question
I had 2 embryo transfers on 5th april 2010.  On 9th and 10th of april I had vaginal secretions clear with slight yellowing.  On 12th april I had my period full on bleeding now for the past 3 days.  i contacted my doctor, I went in for a blood test on the 12th, my levels were low, but said to continue to take my progestrone 2x per day and my injection.  I've been taking these since day 1 of the transfer.

they have instructed to continue the course with the suppositories and injections and go for another test on 18th.

is it too late for me, I had the usual cramping at the beginning, I feel my attempt at pregnancy has failed.

Answer
Hello Tia from Kuwait,

It sounds like you could be headed for a miscarriage, since the bHCG levels were low, but I agree with your doctors that you should continue on the medications until it is known for sure.  That will be when the levels drop.  Bleeding is also very common with IVF so it may not necessarily mean that the pregnancy won't continue.  In the U.S., we generally repeat the bHCG levels every 48 hrs to see the trend.  The level should almost double every 48 hrs.  If it doesn't, then we know that the pregnancy has a low likelihood to succeed.  In that case, we follow the bHCG's every week until they return to zero to make sure the pregnancy has resolved.
