Understanding Post-Miscarriage Symptoms: What to Expect

Question
I am 27 years old and just lost my first pregnancy at 5 1/2 weeks along.  I conceived in the first month of trying. The miscarriage began a week ago, and I passed the tissue the next day.  About a week before I began to miscarry, I noticed small tingling type sensations in my lower right abdominal area.  I wouldn't call them painful, but I have only ever had them once before about 2 years ago, when I was not pregnant (confirmed through blood test).  At that time, no conclusion was reached by my doctor; she said it was probably a singular occurrence of an ovarian cyst and not to worry about it.  Now I am having the feelings again, and I am scared to think it might be a serious problem.  The sensations come and go during the day. I am afraid it could be polycystic ovarian syndrome or worse, but I do have very regular periods, which is the only thing putting my mind at ease. I have an appointment with my OB in a week to do a pelvic ultrasound.  In the meantime, should I be worried?

Answer
Hello Melissa from the U.S.,

I cannot think of anything serious that the symptoms could indicate that would occur immediately after a miscarriage.  It could be some uterine contractions as the uterus gets back to normal, but I cannot be sure.  An ultrasound will make sure that there is no residual cyst or any other major problem.  So, in the meantime, I don't think you need to be worried.
