Low Hemoglobin & Sugar in Pregnancy: Diet & Fetal Growth

Question
Dear Mr. Edward Ramirez,

greetings...

I am 21 years old and I am 7 months pregnant. Until now everything was fine but after my last blood, sugar and urine test I found that my Hemoglobin is going down.... the result was 9 which the doctor said is low. Also the Random sugar level was 124.

I started to take very light diet fearing that my sugar level may go high. Does it effect the baby's growth.

Thank You.

Answer
Hello Jugnu from Saudi Arabia,

You have to eat a healthy and balanced diet.  Do not change your diet unless directed to do so by your doctor or a dietician.  A random glucose of 124 is meaningless.  A fasting glucose should be done and if that is over 100, then a 1 hour glucose tolerance test should be done.  Pregnancy induced diabetes is a common complication of pregnancy and should be checked for as a matter of routine.  In terms of your anemia, you should be on a prenatal vitamin that has both extra iron and folate.  Iron deficiency anemia is the most common type of anemia in pregnancy, and a hemoglobin level of 9 is not necessarily worrisome.

Inadequate diet can certainly affect the baby's growth and health.  That is why it is important that you be under close direction of your doctor and/or dietician.

Good Luck,
