Understanding Pregnancy Testing & STD Concerns After Exposure
QuestionHi i am 32 weeks pregnant and have been doing well. However recently I found out that my husband had been with another woman who is married. He has arranged for bllod test for heps, Hiv and any other possible stds which can be detected by blood testing. But my concern besides the shock and worry is that approximately 1 week after he was with her i was tested routinly for group b strep vaginally. The result i was informed today was negative but i am wondering how long would it take before it could show on a smear? I too at the same time was checked for gonorrea and chalmydia. Has there been enough time during that week to ensure their absence. I really would appreciate your prompt advice, sincerely christine
AnswerI am sorry that happened... I know that is devastating for you. From the medical side, I see you have extensive worries about having gotten some STD.
B-Strep- should show up right away. Plus, B-Strep really isn't a sexually transmitted disease (STD), but just colonization of one type of bacteria that is harmless to you but potentially dangerous to a newborn.
The gonorrhea and chlamydia should be rechecked and would show up positive on a culture for sure, 10 days after exposure, and probably would show up 5 days after exposure.
Hope this helps you.
