Do You Catch a Cold From Being Cold? Understanding Colds & Viruses

Question
We have a great debate in our house. My husband says you will catch a cold if you do not dress warmly when you go outside. I argue that colds are caused by a virus and there is no relation to how you dress.  What is the relationship between dress and catching a cold?
Thank you for your response,
Debbi

Answer
Debbi,

If you believe in the germ theory then yes you are correct in stating that germs cause colds.  Rhinovirus and dozens of other viruses cause colds, etc. and are not related to temperature.  HOWEVER, if you 'shock' the body by exposure to low temperatures you are placing your whole body and the immune system in jeopardy.

The nose, pharynx and sinuses may react to cold weather by increasing secretions which may be trapped in the sinus cavities and harbor bacterial infections (sinusitis).  The lungs when 'shocked' can trap fluid in the alveoli and subject the victim to pneumonia.  Shocking the immune system will not allow for optimally fighting off of viral insult and thus making one more prone to infection with the cold causing viruses.
