Persistent Cold Symptoms: Understanding Viral Infections and When to Seek Further Evaluation

Question
hello doctor,
my question is about viruses. for three months now ive been sick with a
virus thats just like a cold. productive cough congestion headache
sore throat, it will get better for a few days then come right back. i
have seen three docs including an ent who put me on two sets of
antibiotics for my swollen tonsils and glands with no relief. i keep being told i
have a virus. ive had a sinus ct bloodwork and allergy testing all came back ok. now my husband is sick with it also, ( have two kids who arent sick)  i am a 27 yr old female and i was just wondering what kind of virus lasts this long? and when can i expect relief. could it be some other illness? the cough and when i blow my nose is a neon green/yellow color and sometimes i blow out blood. other wise i feal ok just getting worried. any advice would be helpfull. thank you

Answer
virus' should not last this long, it sounds like you have a chronic sinus infection that should be treated very aggressively, sometimes with a longer course of broad spectrum antibiotics, sometimes steroids, and afrin nasal spray for a week.  It sounds like you have had most of the workup appropriate for it.....
