Herpes Simplex 1 & Oral Sex: Symptoms, Risks & What to Do

My husband performed oral sex on me and i noticed the next day he had a scab on the middle of his lip.  He said he bit his lip and is not a cold sore. I'm not too sure if hes telling me the truth.  What are the chances of getting herpes simplex 1 on the genitals? When do symptoms show up after exposure? His scab was not around the mouth but on the beginning of his inner lip. Thanks.
