Carpal Tunnel Surgery Recovery: Addressing Persistent Numbness & Pain

Question
I have had carpal tunnel surgery on December 1, I did not have the traditional open surgery, but one where the wrists are cut across horizontially and device is inserted inside and the cuts are made.  Anyhow, I still suffer at night with my small finger and the finger beside it going numb.  My right hand is especially bad.  I was off of work for two weeks before returning.  However, I was not prevented from doing anything on the day of the surgery I was told, you can do everything but no heavy lifting for a few days, no driving a car for 24 hours and don't get them wet, other than that you can do everything as you normally do.  The palms of my hands on both hands are still very sore and tender, sometimes the palm on my right hand looks swollen. Should this have been gone by now?  The only follow up with the surgeon was to go back and have the stitches removed one week later.  All he asked was if my hands were still numb, I said no because at that time they weren't - I hadn't returned to work!  I do ALOT of typing, filing, mousing, writing, etc.

Answer
Hi Tammy,
I think that you should tell him that your symptoms have recurred. It sounds like you had the "scope" procedure done (with which I am familiar and have done in the past). It is possible that there is a developing scar tissue which is bringing back your symptoms. What I have found that works is massaging the palm over the operative site. This can desensitize the area and might relieve some of the local pain symptoms. I still think that you should ask for a follow up with your surgeon.
