Understanding Persistent Sulfur Burps in Children: Causes & Solutions
QuestionMy 11 year old daughter has been suffering from the "smelly" sulfur burps for the last few years. Frequency has increased to daily no matter what she eats. She has been tested for food allergies; which she was positive for strawberries, most nuts, shellfish, and tuna...however, she has no problem eating any of these items. She has tested negative for h-pylori, celiac disease, lactose and sugar intolerance. She has had a three day study with x-rays of the rate of the intestinal emptying (can't remember the name of the procedure). Has been on acid reducing medicine on and off with no benefit for the last two years. Multiple stool and blood tests have also come back negative for anything unusual. The doctor is stumped at this point, as am I. I have read multiple blogs and realize that we are not the only ones dealing with this issue without getting answers. She is 11 and about to go to middle school and the poor thing has a cloud of smelly burps following her everywhere. Any ideas on what to do at this point?
AnswerHi Jennifer,
Oddly enough she may have a chronic sinus infection that could account for this. Another consideration is gall bladder disease. It sounds like she has had a good gastrointestinal work up so far. My ideas are suggestions only but may be worth looking into.
