Shoulder Pain & Thumb Numbness: Causes, Relief & What to Do

Question
I'm a 26 year old female. It started paining from the back of my neck and the pain radiated to the shoulders. Though a bout of Motrin seemed to subdue the pain initially, it hasnt helped me for more than a week now. The pain still radiated below and the entire arm started hurting and feel a kind of numbness in my thumb. I went to a doctor and he prescribed only ibuprofin with a high dose, but it doesn't help.
The pain increases as the day progresses and is at peak in the night. Can you please help me out on this.

Answer
it sounds like you have a pinched nerve at the neck, maybe from a bulging disc.  The motrin is a reasonable treatment initially.  Often we will use a short course of steroids by mouth, like prednisone for 7-14 days.  If no relief, then you should get the neck imaged with an MRI optimally
