Neck and Shoulder Pain: Understanding Causes & Relief

Question
Hi Micheal,
I have a pain at the base of my neck (maybe around C6 or C7).  I also have pain (tightness) between my shoulder blade on the left side.  I have range in my neck but I can feet the stiffness.  when someone applies even the slightest pressure on the side close to C6 and C7, I feel an extremely uncomfortable shooting pain in the back of my shoulder.  I don't know if I am explaining this right or if it makes sense.  Thank you for any advice you can give.

Answer
Thanks for your inquiry, Camilla.

As a professional massage therapist, it is not within my work to diagnose any ailments or conditions. I can merely suggest or recommend that you apply ice compresses to the area frequently to reduce any internal swelling/inflamation. Depending on how long you have been enduring this condition, it would be my recommendation that if the icing does not quell the discomfort within a week's time, you should see either your family physician or a chiropractor for diagnosis and treatment plan.

I hope my answer provides you with some guidance.
Michael, LMT
