Question -
i am a 20 years old female who works at a supermarket doing various jobs.  about a week ago my right thumb started hurting at the joint.  i woke up this morning and now my left thumb hurts too.  i originally thought it was because i am constantly writing throughout the day, but now that my left thumb hurts as well i dont think that is the case.  it only hurts when i move my thumbs; i have no pain when my thumbs are idle. do you have any idea what the problem could be?
     Thank you for your time,
         Jennifer
PS i have no medical insurance so if you could recommend something that i could do about it that would be great.

Hi Jennifer,
I need to know what joint you are talking about. There are three thumb joints.
The most distant from your hand is number one etc.
Thanks

It's the joint where my thumb meets my hand so i guess it's number 2

Answer
Hi Jennifer,
Thanks. Do your fingers snap when bending them or does the joint refuse to bend all the way like it is being prevented from doing so? This may be a tendinitis or the development of a trigger thumb. I doubt it is arthritis due to your age, but nothing can be ruled out without an exam. For now I would try Ibuprofen 200 mg's, three tablets three times a day with meals provided you don't have any reason not to take it. If this gets worse, you'll have to figure a way to see somebody
