Understanding IM Injections: The Importance of Aspiration

Question
I have often wondered what the reason is for having to aspirate when giving IM injections. What is the reason for this? What problems can occur is the injection is given anyway?

Answer
Hi Patricia and thanks for writing,

An "IM" (intramuscular injections) injection is meant to be injected into the muscle so we aspirate first to ensure we don't see blood which would indicate the needle was in a vein. If the needle was in a vein then the medication would be given IV (intravenously) and not IM (intramuscularly); this could be dangerous and possibly even fatal as medications are far more potent and work much faster if given IV.

I hope this answers your questions, all my best,

Margot
