AnswerHi Sirat and thanks for writing,
1. What is your profession? Profession = Nursing; Career = Healthcare Administrator. How would you describe your profession? Dedicating your life to caring for others and promoting best practice in your particualr field (mine is Geriatrics, Long Term Care & Community Care).
2. What program did you graduate University or College from? General Nursing Diploma from B.C.I.T. then BScN from University of Victoria.
o How many years did it take to complete? 5
o What were some of the undergrad courses that were related to Physical Education? In theory only as we did study Anatomy & Physiology in depth & other health-related courses.
o Were pre-requisite courses in high school a big help in certain areas of your study? Yes, a good understanding of Grade XII English, Math, Biology & Chemistry are essential for entry into Nursing.
3. Would a background in Physical and Health Education help in your career? Yes. How? It would give you a good basic knowledge of how the body works and obviously any health-related course would compliment the Nursing education. I would think that a P&HE degree would be an excellent preparation for Nursing and make you a better Nurse.
4. What do you believe is the most important component of Physical and Health Education in your area of expertise; i.e. biomechanics, anatomy, etc.? It provides a basic knowledge of health and how preventative medicine benefits each of us.
5. What is the most demanding aspect of your profession? It varies person to person; some find it emotionally draining, some find it physically draining, as an administrator I find it a huge time committment that interferes with my family life - I typically work 60-80 hours per week.
6. What characteristics do you feel must be present in those who wish to pursue your career? Couriosity, intelligence, empathy and excellent personal virtues.
7. How important is communication and people-skills in respect to the profession? Extremely as we deal with people who are often in crisis.
Hope this helps, all the best with your studies.
