QuestionMy mother is 87 and broke her hip about 4 weeks ago.We brought her home from the hospital on Saturday,as she cannot bear any weight and therefore is not eligible for any further rehab.Prior to this she lived on her own,so living with us is a very large change. She has always been very demanding and impatient.Today she suddenly has changed and is very serene and loving,as she was many years ago. A friend told me that sometimes a personality change of this type means that she is at peace ,feels safe and may be ready to die.She is eating well, but drinking very little.Of course, she may be back to her cantankerous later this evening or tomorrow, but I was wondering if you have ever seen this type of personality change and what it could possibly be attributed to.Thank you for offering this wonderful service.
AnswerHi Jaclyn and thanks for writing,
I have seen sudden personality changes with seniors many times and there are many possible causes. She may well feel fortunate and safe in your home and is settling down, or she may be letting go and has given up on the fight (but I would imagine it's the first).
Of course sudden onset confusion or aggression is often caused by easily treated infections (most commonly urinary tract infections in older woman).
I hope this answers your question, all my best,
Margot
