Peripheral Neuropathy: Understanding Symptoms, Diagnosis, and Treatment Options
QuestionI'm an overall healthy male, 76. For several weeks, I have had a numbness and tingling sensation in my right foot, in and immediately behind the toes; also toe/joint weakness that makes rising on tiptoes on right foot impossible. Family doctor says peripheral neuropathy, referred me to a neurologist who prescribed Lyrica (no benefit), said it is apparently genetic neuropathy, no cure. This is discouraging. Would a podiatrist, a chiropractor, or an acupuncturist be of probable benefit?
Answerin one foot, I would worry that a nerve is being pinched, usually in the low back or sometimes from a shoe that fits differently.... I wouldn't write it off as perip neuropathy yet... I would consider nerve conduction studies to see if there is a specific nerve that is involved first. Before I saw the other specialists, get a firm diagnosis. (with the nerve conduction studies)
