Understanding Unexpected Findings in a Urine Test: What Could It Mean?

Question
QUESTION: I'm hoping you can answer this for me. I don't know who else to turn to.
My husband has a lot of health problems and takes a lot of medicine.
Well, yesterday when he went to the Dr his urine test indicated he was taking other drugs than what he is prescirbed.
I know he doens't. I usually do up his medicines and I only put in what they prescribe.

Is there anohter reason for this?

The Drs office is suppose to send it off somewhere to have it tested. In the meantime I'm going to go crazy wondering what could be wrong.

ANSWER: you would have to be more specific, but it sounds like he is being presribed controlled medicines and it is a routine to check to see that people on these meds take only the proper meds and not other non-prescribed controlled meds.

There are sometimes "false positives" meaning the test was positive but the drug wasn't there.... that is why they are sending off the confirmation test.

If you want more info, please give me the specifics.....

QUESTION: hi again. You're right about the meds. I didn't want to make the letter to long.
He does take oxycodine for back pain. (He's had 6 operations)
He also take medicine for heart problems, high blood pressure, and diabetes.
He'll be 64 this summer.
Do you need any more info?

Answer
Well, that is pretty much what I expected.... as I said, sometimes there are "false positives" that would be cleared up with the confirmation test.

But, if he took another kind of pain medicine or another class of controlled drug (like Valium) unknown to the doctor, that would raise a suspicion of abuse... that is the whole concept of doing these drug tests for people on chronic pain meds.

I hope it works out......
