PSA Test Results: Understanding Your Prostate Health
QuestionFirst I am 81 and weight 160 My last two test were9.3 2007 and 10. 2008 and now 6 16 09 13.9. Am I due for a biopsy?? Could this be an error in the test since the number does not match the slow increase over 10 years of testing. Thanks Jim
AnswerHi Jim. Because your PSA has slowly risen over the past few years, you may need further testing. The PSA is a "screening" test, so abnormal value doesn't always mean problems. Prostate manipulation by biopsy or resection of the prostate will significantly elevate PSA levels. The blood test should be done before surgery or six weeks after manipulation. gorous physical activity affecting the prostate, such as bicycle riding, may cause a temporary rise in PSA levels. In some men, PSA may rise temporarily due to other prostate conditions, especially infection. I do think you need further testing, such as a more specific blood test for prostate cancer, such as a free PSA, and/or a biopsy. Check with your doctor.
