Colonoscopy Prep and Symptom Resolution: A Patient's Experience

Question
I know you're not a gastroenterologist but if possible would still like your educated opinion. For 7 months I had diarrhea, somtimes nocturnal, upper abdominal pain, groin pain, bad heartburn. They ran almost every test but showed nothing. A colonoscopy also showed nothing, but a few days after cleansing the bowel for the prep, the symptoms went away on their own after all that time. They initially ran tests on the stool to check for parasites and the tests were negative. But is it likely or possible that the cleansing effect of the colonoscopy prep somehow got rid of something that caused everything? Maybe a parasite they didn't test for? Just wondered if the prep could have anything to do with it.  Thanks

Answer
I have done colonoscopies for a couple decades... I have seen this happen....

There is no medical evidence that colon cleansing does anything, however, sometimes it is hard to diagnose some of the parasitic problems, like giardia.  And you can't sterilize the colon completely, so cleansing might help for a while but it would return.  A lot of these are food intolerances, such as lactose.   Also, inflammatory bowel conditions may go inactive for a long time and maybe you got lucky and it is inactive, but it is unlikely that the prep itself was the fix.......
