QuestionWhat is the difference between a sigmoidoscopy and a colonoscopy? Which is best for a 1st time test on a 57 year old woman?
AnswerJudi,
A sigmoidoscopy only allows the physician to view the lower portion of the intestine or the sigmoid colon.
The colonoscopy allows the physician to view the entire intestinal tract and is much more diagnostic.
It takes approximately 10-20 minutes and usually the patient is placed under minmal sedation and the procedure is painless.
I much prefer the colonoscopy for any patient.
