Post-Meal Fatigue: Causes and Solutions

Question
QUESTION: What could be any explanations for me becoming very tired after eating a meal where immediately afterwards start yawning and need to lay down. I even rubber legged and don't able to control it. Does not happen with snacks.

ANSWER: Dear Albert,

You are eating more than your body can digest. After eating, especially a large meal, insulin is released to keep blood sugars under control, and your body requires a lot of energy to digest large meals. I would recommend breaking up your entire lunch over 2 to 3 meals. In other words, you will be eating between 5 to 6 times a day. Each meal being a small portion. This will keep your blood levels balanced, without causing your gastrointestinal system to expend too much energy digesting.

QUESTION: Thanks for your prompt answer-it makes sense. So for instance after my dinner it is almost immediate-still sitting at the dinner table that it is almost like narcolepcy & I actually stagger to my bedroom & my legs are wobbly as if I were drunk. I lie down for 1 hr and then I am fine. Is it the insulin that causes this feeling? Otherwise I have perfect health & can eat anything else---even sugar & at anytime of day & have no problem. Insulin can cause this?

Answer
Dear Albert,

Yes, insulin can cause this. I would suggest two tests:
    1) A fasting blood sugar
    2) A Hemaglobin A1C

These two tests will help to determine if you are  hypoglycemic - which many times is a precursor to diabetes; otherwise, it is a simple case of spreading out your meals to several small meals a day.
