Liver & Detoxification: Understanding Liver Function and Food Safety
QuestionOne of the functions of the liver is the detoxification of the blood. Does this mean that if I eat the liver of animal I am more at risk of collecting toxins that if I eat another part of it?
AnswerThe liver is an organ of detoxification and metabolism... food, drugs, chemicals, anything that you put in your mouth for that matter is processed through the liver. It is a very complicated process typically dealing with three forms of detoxification and processing and metabolization, the byproducts are either excreted in the stool or bile (gallbladder), the Liver per se is NOT a repository for the toxins. So to answer your question NO you will not build up toxins by eating animal liver. It is a high source of Iron and other nutrients and also cholesterol too (so be careful if your TG and LDL are high)
