IUD Insertion After Colposcopy: Risks & Considerations

Question
QUESTION: Hi, I am just looking for an opinion on whether you believe having a Mirena IUD inserted at the end of a colposcopy would be ok, or might increase the chance of an infection?

ANSWER: Hi Jessica,

I cannot really advise you on this because I can't recommend the IUD. I feel that there are too many risks and side effects for me to recommend. Please ask your doctor or healthcare provider about this. But please do some research first.

Sincerely,
Diane W.

QUESTION: I've done lots of research, and had an IUD in for a long time with no problems.  During a colposcopy the Dr pulled on the string (she wanted to straighten it, it wasn't in her way at all), and pulled it out.  She tried to push it back in but it broke, and then she put a new one it.  A week later I was in the hospital with a severe infection, that after a month, I am still having symptoms of.  A lot of people think the Dr is responsible for inserting it at the wrong time (and trying to push the first IUD back in), and she sounded very nervous about getting in trouble the day I was admitted the to hospital.  I'm just trying to figure out if she really did do something wrong, or its just a coincidence, since getting an infection is so rare.  I've found forums with 3000 members with IUDS and read all of the comments, and I cannot find one person who has had an infection.  I really cannot find anything online that would link a colposcopy at all, so I'm just trying to find an opinion on whether it was done safely or not.

Answer
I'm sorry that I'm not able to help you on this. I have not heard of this either but it does sound suspicious. Maybe you could talk to a lawyer about this and perhaps get medical compensation. Let me know what happens.
