Mirena IUD Embedded: Understanding Your Options & Next Steps

Question
Hi, I just found out on January 7th, via a laproscopic ultrasound, that my Mirena IUD is embedded in my uterine wall. I have had the IUD for just under 2 years. I have an appointment for February 20th (the earliest I could get in, 6 weeks later!) to have a doctor take a look and see what he can do. My problem is that I am on a low income government insurance plan and there is only one place that I can go which is this women's clinic. I called to ask what they were going to do to me and the woman at the clinic put me on hold and went to ask a doctor. She said that at my appointment a doctor would take a look and if he could "visualize" the IUD then he would try to get it out. If not, then they would schedule me an appointment for the surgery clinic (which is what I am sure will happen because it is embedded!). Who knows how long I will have to wait for that appoitment!  So, my question is, is it normal to have to wait so long for something that is this serious? According to the Mirena website this is a serious problem. I know from my research that with this IUD embedded in me there is a risk of infection, infertility, and it could keep on going through my uterus into my abdomen. If I have to wait 2 or more months to get it taken out doesn't that seem risky!  Maybe it is normal, but I have a feeling that it is just because I am low income and I have to go to this clinic. Any knowledge you are willing to share would be greatly appreciated. Thank you for your time and consideration.
p.s. Embedment was not a side effect listed with Mirena until July 2008 and I had mine placed in February 2007. They also added some warnings about breastfeeding and waiting longer to have the IUD placed. I wish I could have been warned.

Answer
You don't say where you live, and that affects how soon you may expect to get something like this taken care of.  I'm sure you are correct that  you have to wait longer because you are low income.  If you had money or insurance you would be able to find a doctor that would take care of you promptly.  On the other hand, the Mirena is probably just sitting there embedded in the uterine wall and not causing any problem.  It may not be doing its job either, so you need some other form of birth control until it's taken care of.  While they list infection and infertility and perforation, the most likely thing in my opinion is that the IUD is just sitting there part way through the uterine wall and not causing any problem, especially if you are having no pain.  Sometimes they'll be able to remove it through the cervix, with or without doing a hysteroscopy, which means looking through the cervix with an instrument.  Sometimes they'll need to do a laparoscopy, which involves an instrument inserted under your umbilicus.  As long as you are feeling well I would try not to worry too much while you're waiting.  Most likely any problem that the IUD could cause (adhesions) it has already caused.  Good luck.
