Incompetent Cervix: Understanding Progesterone Injections & Cervical Strengthening

Question
QUESTION: I was diagonosed with an incompetent cervix. I am 14.5 weeks pregnant. My Dr. has prescribed progesterian weekly injections instead if the stitch I was trying to find out more about this procedure but am having very little luck. Can you tell me more about these injections? They are supposed to help strengthen the cervix.
ANSWER: I have never heard of this treatment for incompetent cervix, and I am not having much luck finding information on it, either.  On what basis was your diagnosis made?  The formal requirements for a diagnosis of incompetent cervix usually include a prior second-trimester loss with no other available explanations, making it a diagnosis of exclusion.

QUESTION: I did lose a baby last year at 23.5 weeks. She lived about 6 hours after delivery. They were not sure what caused me to go into early delivery. By the time I got to the hospital I was dilated to 5 they gave me an injection to stop the labor but it didnt work. He said they used to give the progesterian awhile ago.

Answer
If you still want more information, I would recommend asking your doctor for references, articles, and literature supporting his treatment plan.  He should be able to provide these and go over them with you.  If he cannot provide evidence to back up his treatment plan, you may want to seek a second opinion.
