Pregnancy Concerns: Bleeding and Cervical Thinning at 18 Weeks - Seeking Support

Question
This is my 4th preg. I have a 5 years old my first child I had no problems. I went the full-term and he was healthy. Then I lost a 15 week old I delivered it in the hospital don't know why, then I had another but was way early and just passed it.  Now I'm 18 week and I had a Cerclage put in at 13weeks and everything was fine until about 2 weeks ago I started bleeding and my cervix started thining so I was put on bed rest for the rest of the term. I'm scared because this is it for me and my husband we can't go Thru this anymore. The doctor said if I get to 24 week he will send me somewhere so I can be monitored. I'm scared and don't want anything to happen, so any advice will help me! Thanks again

Answer
Meredith,

I can't even begin to imagine how difficult this has been for you.  Without more information, I can't say why you are prone to preterm labor and early loss.

The best course of action at this point is to remain on bedrest to help prevent any further cervical changes from happening.  There are some medications that can also be tried to prevent contractions if they begin.  You may also be a candidate for progesterone therapy (either by pill or cream) which is sometimes used in women with a history of preterm labor.  It's the hormone that is responsible for sustaining a pregnancy and is produced by the placenta.  If the levels get too low, preterm labor can result.  You'd have to talk to your doctor to see if any of these options would be appropriate in your case.

Dehydration can also add to the problem, so be sure to stay well hydrated throughout the day.

I know it's not much comfort, but try your best to rest and relax as much as possible.  Stress only adds to the risk that labor will begin.

I wish you and your family all the best,
Catherine
