Trying to Conceive After a Miscarriage: What to Expect & When to Seek Help

Question
I am 23 years old and i got pregnant two years ago with my ex boyfriend but i missed carried at 11 weeks, which was horrible. I have now been with my fiance a year and a half and i came off the contraceptive pill almost 9 months ago and i am still not pregnant. He is is 31 and don't know if age has anything to do with it. But I feel very frustrated. Anything i can do to help?

Answer
Hi Rebekah,

Assuming you have had normal periods since going off the pill (sometimes it can take a few months for your cycle to get back to normal after going off the pill) one thing you can do is try using an ovulation kit to see if and when you are ovulating - you should be having sex within 3 days before to 1 day after ovulation.  If you are NOT ovulating, see your gynecologist.

If you are ovulating (and having sex during that time) and you don't get pregnant within the next three months (which will make it a year since you started trying to get pregnant) make an appointment with your gynecologist.  If it took awhile after stopping the pill before your period started, you can give it a little longer. Your doctor can run some tests to try to determine the reason why you aren't getting pregnant.

Hang in there - it is very normal for it to take 9-12 months to get pregnant!  I hope you see a positive pregnancy test soon.
