Understanding Breast Ultrasound Results: Cyst & Nodule - What Does It Mean?

Question
I am a 28 year old female with pain on the right side of right breast. an ultrasound found the following: cyst where the pain is, and a hypoechoic nodule in the retroareolar region which could be solid in nature.  The nodule measures:  0.4x0.5x0.6 cm. Is that considered big?? I am being sent for a mammogram.  Should I see a breast specialist for a second opinion? Is there a possibility that this is malignant????? Please help me understand these results.

Answer
The cyst is probably NOT malignant and can explain your pain there. What the nodule is can not be decided from this. It is not big. At your age the probability of breast cancer is small but not impossible. I suggest ultrasound guided needle biopsies of both the nodule and the cyst to make sure what they are. You may need to see a breast specialist to arrange that. Please do keep me posted!
