DES Exposure & Cancer Risk: Understanding Your Concerns

I am a 40 year old female whose mother was given DES during her pregnancy with me.  I know I am at risk for certain Gyn cancers, but am I at an increased risk for breast cancer?  If so, which type?

Answer
You are at risk for adenocarcinoma of your vagina and of your cervix (though the risk of that cervix cancer may have decreased now at your present age and above). There is as far as is known at present NO increased risk for breast cancer of any kind.

An extra advice. When you post a question here PLEASE do NOT use abbreviations/acronyms like DES! I know that Americans are very fond of using them but they drive the rest of us crazy! I'm a Swede, living in Sweden and English is not my first language. I just happened to understand what you meant. Another time you may not be so lucky. PLEASE write everything out fully in order to avoid misunderstandings and mistakes!
