Switching Birth Control Pills: What to Expect & When to Worry

Question
HI, I HAVE BEEN ON OVCON 35 FOR ABOUT 2 YEARS. I RECENTLY SWITCHED TO ORTHO NOVUM 1/35. I'M REALLY WORRIED. I FEEL NAUCEOUS AND SICK ALL THE TIME NOW. I HAVE ONLY BEEN ON ORTHO NOVUM 3 DAYS. I'M ON BIRTH CONTROL FOR MY SEVERE CRAMPS AND IRREGULAR PERIODS. I'M 18 YEARS OLD. I WOULD APPRECIATE ANY ANSWER YOU COULD GIVE MY. I'M JUST REALLY WORRIED THAT YOUR NOT SUPPOSED TO SWITCH BC. THANKS, JEN

Answer
Switching birth control pills isn't so bad.  Taking them is quite bad, however.  If you are taking them for cramps and irregular periods, you are not doing yourself any favors.  Nothing is getting fixed and when you stop taking them, the problem that caused the severe cramping and irregularity will still be there.  You are not getting at the root cause, just covering up the problem.

A side effect of the pill is nauseousness.  It might go away.  You can wait and see.  There is nothing to worry about.  You've been subjecting yourself to the hormones for 2 years, the damage is already done.  I don't know if this brand is stronger or just a different combination of hormones.

If you haven't read the package insert, you should definitely do that.  If you are sexually active, which is probably why you are worried, there is no difference in the effectiveness when you switch brands.  Although, no birth control is 100% effective.
