Understanding Spotting on Birth Control: Causes & When to Worry

Question
Hi,
I'm on birthcontrol and have been for about seven months now. I started my new pack on 9/23 so I ended my period on 9/22. I have been having spotting that is just like a normal period the last four days. I have never had spotting before. I'm worried something is wrong such is that I'm pregnant or have something else.

Answer
Spotting while taking the active pills is called breakthrough bleeding.  It's fairly common on the pill.  It could be from stress or something else.  A possible cause is an STD, so if that's possible, it's best to be tested for STD's.  As long as there is no STD, it's not usually serious, and will often resolve over time.  As long as you had a normal period at the end of your pack, pregnancy is highly unlikely.  If the spotting persists, then I would see your doctor for evaluation.
