Understanding Post-Birth Control Spotting: Causes & When to Worry

Question
Hello.

I've been off and on different birth controls for about 4 years.
I had began the nuva ring and took it out for my normal period (this was the first ring I used and decided to quit birth control all together) but after my period (which was January 7th to the 14th) I've been spotting. It is brown and  too light to be considered a period but this has been going on for a couple of days. Now it is the 20th-so it began about 1 1/2 days ago on the 19th. I've always had unprotected sex with my partner because we've felt like I couldn't really get pregnant (we've tried for 2 years thus me getting off and on birth control). But are these symptoms just the after effect of me stopping the nuva ring? Or is it more? I've been feeling a bit dizzy and feel a bit sick to my stomach but not enough for me to worry.
I hope I'm not having a miscarriage.
Please let me know if you can help.

Answer
It's probably just after effects from the ring.  Since your period came after you took out the ring it's very unlikely that you're pregnant.  If you want to be sure, you could see a doctor and get a serum HCG test, which would show if this was a very early pregnancy.  A pregnancy test might be positive also.  But probably whatever is causing your dizziness and nausea is also causing the spotting (virus? stress?).  It will probably all resolve with time.
