Understanding Spotting and Breakthrough Bleeding on Birth Control

Question
This month was my first month of taking oral contraceptives. I am taking Aviane, for reduction of cramps and you know, future use. However, I haven't been taking it at the EXACT time like you're supposed to. It varies between nine and eleven, mostly. I don't know if what happened was spotting, or breakthrough bleeding. It lasted for maybe a week or more, but it was pretty light compared to my normal period. It was a darker hue than my regular blood, like a brownish colour, and very gooey. I also have some pre-existing vulvar/vaginal irritation that comes and goes, and is so far undiagnosed. So, in short, what's going on with me?

Answer
Hi Sara,

I'm not a medical professional so I would advise you to see your regular physician. I don't recommend anyone taking the pill for reduction of cramps or really for any reason. From my research I've found that there are risks and side effects with every kind of hormonal birth control method. About the time that you take the pill, really a two hour window should not affect anything. I'm not sure what causes the bleeding but it may be a side effect of the hormones. Ask your doctor about this. If you can, I would recommend going off the birth control pill. Let me know what you think. My email address is CHERYL51@aol.com

Diane Cheryl
