Birth Control Pills for Menopause: Relief & Period Changes

Question
QUESTION: I was recently put on the pill to reduce my menopausal symptoms, hot flashes night sweats, etc. I was told that this will also make my period more regular. right now I will bleed for sometimes 23 days in a month.  How is the pill better then say laser ablation ?

ANSWER: Hi Roxanne,
The pill changes your hormones to try to give you normal periods (and help the menopausal symptoms).  Laser ablation destroys the uterine lining to decrease or eliminate menstrual bleeding.  Ablation has no effect on your hormones or any symptoms other than bleeding.  It's not normal to bleed for 23 days, so I think you need to get that evaluated.

QUESTION: I have been evaluated.  I've internal and external ultra sound, I have had a biopsies done, blood test etc. Nothing seems to explain why I bleed for so long .  I have just started on the pill so as of yet I see no oblivious relief.  My doctor says it could take up to 3 months to see any change.  I still believe that Laser ablation would be better then taking the pill, but I can't seem to convince my doctor of this.  But then he is the expert not me .:)

Answer
It's true the ablation would probably help the bleeding, but it wouldn't do anything for the hot flashes and night sweats.  Plus you'd have some bleeding and drainage for a while after the ablation.  Since you've had the evaluation, I think a little time on the pill will resolve the bleeding.
