Birth Control & Period Irregularities: Spotting and Missed Periods
QuestionI have been on birth control for about a year now, and had a normal period starting on about the 18th on December 2009. About a week after my period I forgot two or more days of birth control, which I believe to have caused my spotting that resulted on like 3rd day after missing my first pill. The spotting lasted about four days and stopped when I restarted my pills. Since the spotting I was supposed to start my period a week ago, on around the 20th? & I did not start.. I finished my reminder pills and started a new pack yesterday.. But I was wondering, since I have had sexual intercourse almost everyday or every other day this month whether I should be worried if that is the reason that I missed my period. I cannot get a test for 2 more days and need to know if I should not take my pills until the test. I would like to know the chances whether it is more likely I miss because of my spotting, or because of pregnancy..
AnswerI think the two are equally likely. The spotting could be causing you to miss your period, or it could be from pregnancy. It may be slightly more likely that it's from the spotting, since it's not too unusual to miss periods on the pill anyway. I would be inclined to continue your pills, as we haven't found that to be a problem during early pregnancy, although I would try to get the test as soon as possible. Best regards.
