Birth Control & Wedding Night: Managing Menstrual Cycles

Question
Hello Drea!
I am 19 years old and getting married on August 5th 2006.  I Have irregular periods, or once every 5 weeks.  I never know exactly when i am going to start. I am supposed to start any day now i think and i am supposed to start birth control on the sunday after.  Here's my question, I am afraid i will be on my period on my wedding night and i was wondering if there were any ways to start birth control early  or before my period?  Or if there is anything i can do to make sure i dont start the week of my wedding?

Answer
Hi Elisa,

If you start the pills to early, it can cause your cycle to be even more irregular, and you won't have be protected from pregnancy that first month.

I just had a previous question from a bride-to-be who is getting married in July. She discovered her wedding would fall the weekend of her period, and checked with her Dr. to make sure she could double up on a pill pack. This means when you get to the time you want to skip the period, you do not take the placebo pills, but rather start a new pack right away. If, once you cycle regulates, you discover that your period will come that weekend, check with your Dr, double up packs if you can, and you'll miss that period and still be protected against pregnancy.

Good Luck and Congratulations,

Drea Jean
