Post-Birth Control Hair Growth: What to Expect & When to Worry
QuestionI was on the birth control pill (Trinessa) for 1 year for acne. I went off of it because of increased anxiety and worsening of leg veins. I am 4 1/2 months off the pill now, and am noticing a bit of increased hair growth on my face. I have also been on an azelaic acid for my rosacea which has a side effect of increased hair growth on the face. Is there any chance going off the birth control pill could cause an increase in some hair growth while my hormones level out completely... or should I suspect it is the azelaic acid and stop that? The increased growth isn't horrible except for 1 stray hair that was almost an inch long in the middle of my right cheek. I hadn't noticed it before today! Needless to say I was freaking out quite a bit. I also feel extra stupid because I had just visited my dermatologist this morning and told her the prescription was working just fine. Any advice?
AnswerHi Katie,
I haven't really heard of going off the birth control pill causing hair growth. But I could look up more about it if you want me to. Email me at CHERYL51@aol.com and we can talk more. I suppose there could be side effects from the hormones or lack of. I have one hair that is on my chin that is bothering me too and I don't know what is causing that. I have to shave that particular hair about every 3 days. Yes, it's embarrassing.
I'm glad you went off the pill though, and hope you don't have too many side effects from this. I think it is best for your health. Hope to hear from you soon.
Diane Cheryl
p.s. You could call your dermatologist and tell her what is happening and see what she says.
