Post-Pill Recovery: What to Expect After Stopping Birth Control

Question
I got off birth control last month. I took Yasmin for a year (and hated it) then I took Microgestrin for a month and then decided after 1 week on the second pack that I was sick of being controlled by the pill. Not to mention, my husband and I want to have a baby.
I was wondering how long it typically takes for a woman to get back to normal after getting of the pill. We really want to have a baby, but I've heard of women not ovulating for months and months after quitting the pill. Also, I've read that many vitamins become depleted in the body because of the pill. What supplements should I take?

Answer
Hello Sue- I suggest you go to the health food store and get prenatal vitamins that need to be taken three times a day- one brand is called Quest. Then, use condoms until you have had three NORMAL periods in a row- yes, this may take several months. If you conceive before your body is back to normal, you run a higher risk of losing the pregnancy due to inadequate hormones. Also, be sure to start taking a daily folic acid supplement of 1-2 mg. Hope that helps and all the best to you- Cheri.
