Understanding Potential Pregnancy After unprotected Sex

Question
Hello Mr Norman,

My name is Claire and I am a 26 year old girl from Miami, Florida.
Here's my story: last night me and my boyfriend had intercourse (it was day 17 of my cycle!) and he didn't want to use a condom so I didn't say anything and I let him ejaculate on my hands .I also noticed there was some semen on his hands too(about half of the ejaculated quantity). After this I did wash my hands but he didn't wash his and when I went back to our bedroom(about 5 mins later) he inserted his fingers into my vaginal area.It happened so fast that I didn't even have the time to react and tell him to wash his hands first! So now I'm like really worried about it and I think I could be pregnant. Please tell me whether it is possible that I got pregnant and if yes whether you think I should consult a doctor.
Thank you very much in advance and sorry for the details!

Answer
Hello Claire,
I think pregnancy is quite unlikely, although it may be possible.  Semen die pretty fast when exposed to air and room temperature, and although he didn't wash his hands, I would guess he at least wiped them off some.  Most likely there wasn't enough live sperm that got into your upper vagina to cause a pregnancy, although I guess it's not impossible.  Since you had intercourse first and I assume he withdrew, there's some chance also that he might have ejaculated some before he withdrew.  Since you're probably close to ovulation time, you might want to consider emergency contraception, if it's available.  If you need to consult a doctor to get emergency contraception (Plan B pill and others), then I would consider it.  However, I think the chance of pregnancy is very slight, unless he did ejaculate inside some before withdrawing.  It might be more important to learn from this, and use reliable contraception in the future.
